The hardest thing is letting go…
Farseer Kelmon looked at the glowing runes orbiting around the sparse room again, trying to find another meaning. He could not. Suddenly he felt his age, his body heavy, muscles aching. As he walked towards the task the runes had dealt he remembered…
It was over 2 centuries earlier that Kelmon had donned the mask of the seer. 2 centuries of searching for an answer. 2 centuries of coming to the same conclusion. The day was here. It could not be helped.
Kelmon stepped through the arch into the Shrines of Asur. Even though the people of Ulthwe favored the path of the seer there were still those who trod the path of the warrior. He knew the path well; he had come the same way almost every day for the past 2 centuries. He could hear the Howling Banshees war cries clearly now. As he entered the huge domed room he could feel the anger, the hatred that burned in the hearts of his kin when they donned the masks of war. Leading the warriors in the training rituals was the woman who had lead to this moment - the Exarch called Manix though Kelmon knew her real name – Sakaya. The warriors paused in mid strike, dodge or feint as the aura of the room changed with Kelmon’s presence. The Howling Banshees bowed to him in unison, so accustomed to each others movements. Sakaya stepped forward and knelt before him. The banshees behind her did likewise. Kelmon had seen this moment many times in the runes. How had it come to this?
He remembered the day that Sakaya had joined the path of the warrior. He had done so as well, joining the Striking Scorpions while she the Howling Banshees. They fought side by side in many wars for many years. In time they both knew they had learned all they could. The path was complete. The following day Sakaya came to him, told him she was going to return. That the path of the warrior was the only way she felt alive. Kelmon should have known then she was lost to him. Without waiting for a response she left, going back to the shrine to don a suit of Exarch armour and become war incarnate. Frustrated at the way the path had taken Sakaya away from him he sought a way to lead her mind back to him. He joined the path of the seer and devoted his time to learning the runes. For years he sought an answer, following her to battle with the Seer Council until one day, as the runes he cast floated slowly around his head he saw something clearly. He too was lost on the path. The path of the seer. So Farseer Kelmon was born. By this time he could cast a thousand runes and in the last 2 centuries while he continued his search Kelmon discovered he could now cast close to four thousand runes at a time. He sat second only to Eldrad on the Council. Yet he still could not change the future. Not this time.
