Here is the fiction I used for my ultimates army. Its my first attempt so be kind in your critique. Not that it did me any good coming last. I might write up about Licius failure amd the rise of a new power in 2009. Let the new chaos book rule.

The Coming of Darkness

Gabriel was out looking over the valley just north of the family farm. His father had asked him to check if the fields were ready for reseeding in the New Year. Gabriel’s mind was far from the fields and the task his father had set. He was thinking of mighty battles with phantasmal creatures leading an army of the emperors finest and personally besting the mightiest enemy lords.

Gabriel had seen 16 years and eagerly awaited the time of this year’s festival where the local master of the watch would choose those youths of age, who showed promise for training in the Empire’s army. It was Gabriel’s chance to escape the confines of farm life and seek glory and fortune in the name of the emperor.

Gabriel was sure he would be chosen. Farm life had made him strong and amongst his peers he had bested them all in sword practice. In fact only last week Gabriel had disarmed one of the local instructors to the applause of his friends and the look of appreciation of the master of the watch him self. Gabriel knew he would be a sword master for the emperor, only his father had objected and forbade him to attend any further practice sessions, which he dutifully ignored in the name of the emperor. He had muttered some thing about family and war not being the stuff made of dreams.

How would his father know anything about battle he was a farmer after all. Gabriel would be no farmer. He would see his days in glory, defeating the evils which assailed his lands.

From the north came a whispering wind with a cold bite. Gabriel shivered and continued on with his defeat of imagined foes. The wind blew harder and its call louder. In the back of Gabriel’s mind his subconscious cried out in fear, a warning that he could not ignore. Gabriel stopped and tried to listen and he swore that it was calling his name.

In the distance 6 horsemen broke from the forest edge and rode toward Gabriel. They were brutes of men swathed in black leather and their horses bore the mark of the northern gods. Gabriel turned to see the horseman approaching; it was too late for Gabriel when the fear started clawing at his heart. Only now as they began their charge towards him that he recognised them for whom they were - chaos marauders.

Here was his most hated foe, men who looked away from Sigmar and embraced the evil gods. Here was his chance to defend the town and prove his worth, but all he could do was watch as his death approached. They were close now so close he could see the eagerness in their eyes of his impending blood shed.

Gabriel saw his death in those merciless eyes. He knew that he had failed his town as he could not even shout out a warning. Every thing slowed and he saw the mist snorted from the steeds, he saw the lead horseman most likely a chieftain raise his axe for the killing blow. Only now at the moment of his death did he realise the meaning of his fathers words “War is not the stuff of dreamsâ€
